CLEVELAND — A short-handed Guardians team opened a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners June 26 at Progressive Field with a 3-1 loss.
The Guardians are still without Jose Ramirez, Chase DeLauter and Angel Martinez, all of whom are on the injured list as Cleveland searches for offense to replace them.
Joey Cantillo took the mound for Cleveland and put forth a strong start, but Seattle went to work on the Cleveland bullpen to win it.
Here’s how the June 26 Guardians-Mariners game unfolded.
Mariners beat the Guardians
Mariners closer Andres Munoz worked a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the save, as Seattle wins the series-opening game 3-1.
Guardians trail Mariners in 9th inning
The Guardians will take a 3-1 deficit into the ninth inning. Matt Festa is entering the game to pitch.
In the bottom of the ninth, Kyle Manzardo, Brayan Rocchio and Khalil Watson will be due up.
Mariners add to their lead against Daniel Espino
Daniel Espino’s rough stretch has continued, as with a runner in scoring position, Julio Rodriguez roped a single that dropped in front of Steven Kwan in left field, and the Mariners now lead 3-1 in the top of the eighth.
Mariners take the lead vs Tim Herrin, Guardians
Tim Herrin entered the game and committed one of the worst sins of a reliever: he walked the first two hitters he faced.
Herrin induced Josh Naylor into a double play, but J.P. Crawford followed with a grounder up the middle that couldn’t be corralled, and the Mariners took a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning.
Joey Cantillo, Luis Castillo in pitchers’ duel
Tim Herrin will take the mound in the top of the seventh inning in a tied 1-1 game, ending Joey Cantillo’s night.
Cantillo had a great night, striking out nine and allowing just two hits and one run. He’s looked sharper over his last few outings.
Mariners starter Luis Castillo has also been sharp, striking out four and allowing four hits.
Guardians score update
The Guardians and Mariners will enter the top of the fifth inning still tied 1-1.
Cooper Ingle did just draw his first major-league walk, but the Guardians lineup couldn’t bring him home.
Joey Cantillo through four innings has struck out eight and allowed only one hit, it just happened to be Emerson’s score-tying home run.
Colt Emerson blasts home run
Colt Emerson, an Ohio native, has tied it up with a solo home run to right field in the top of the third inning. It was the first hit allowed by Joey Cantillo, who had breezed through the lineup until that moment.
It’s 1-1 heading to the bottom of the third.
Cooper Ingle MLB debut
In his first MLB at-bat, Cooper Ingle ran into a curious situation: do you have the green light on a 3-0 pitch in your very first at-bat?
The answers appears to be yes, as Ingle was given a pitch that caught plenty of the plate, and he swung away, grounding into an inning-ending groundout.
Guardians-Mariners score update
The Guardians have struck first. In the bottom of the first inning, Khalil Watson — hitting cleanup due to the series of injuries to Cleveland’s lineup — drove a double off the wall in left field to score Kyle Manzardo, giving Joey Cantillo and the Guardians a 1-0 lead.
Below is some pregame information.
Cooper Ingle to make MLB debut with Guardians
The Guardians have called up catcher/outfielder Cooper Ingle, who will make his MLB debut and hit fifth against the Mariners.
Stuart Fairchild, who has struggled mightily this season, was designated for assignment.
