Kemp was chosen as the girls wrestler of the year after going 25-1 and becoming the first Airport girl to win a state championship.

She was the 190-pound champion, staging a late rally to beat Kanata Richardson of Bloomfield Hills in the finals.

“It was truly rewarding to see Olivia receive this award among such an outstanding group of candidates,” Airport coach Jon Morris said. “We are incredibly proud of her accomplishment and the recognition she has earned through her dedication, perseverance, and commitment to excellence.

“This award is a reflection not only of Olivia’s individual accomplishments but also of the culture of hard work and dedication within our program. We are excited to celebrate this moment with her and look forward to seeing all that she continues to achieve in the future.”

Skamiera, who scored a school-record 45 goals this season, was the girls soccer player of the year.

“It wasn’t just her goals,” Huron coach Matt Lividini said in explaining why Skamiera was chosen. “She also had 20 assists. That means she is more than just a goal scorer. And she’s not just a girl who sits as a forward. She sometimes moves back into the midfield and plays more of a defensive style.”

Teammates Brooke Burke, Avery Turk and Maiya Thomas also were finalists for the award.

Skamiera recently was named to the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches’ Association Division 2 All-State first team.

Burke and Nhi Vo earned spots on the third team and Thomas, Turk, Ava Banko and Maggie Mentzer received honorable mention along with Airport’s Olivia Bucki.

Ellie Budd and Molly Walline were honorable mention choices in Division 3.
