Bed Bath & Beyond returning to NY through Container Store partnership

Nearly three years after filing for bankruptcy and closing its physical stores, Bed Bath & Beyond is beginning a retail return through a partnership with The Container Store.

In a June 18 press release, the company said it plans to open 22 new Bed Bath & Beyond locations nationwide in collaboration with The Container Store. The rollout has already begun in Texas and will expand in phases across the country.

When will the stores open?

The 22 locations are part of a first-phase rollout. According to the company, stores are currently being converted to the new co-branded format, with additional locations expected to follow in the coming months.

In New York, the concept will launch at:

It’s unclear whether all Container Store locations will adopt the format or if additional sites will be added.

What will the new stores offer?

The combined concept brings together Bed Bath & Beyond’s assortment — including bedding, bath, kitchen and home goods — with The Container Store’s storage solutions, custom closets and design services.

Company leaders say the goal is to create a one-stop destination for home projects.

“By bringing Bed Bath & Beyond and The Container Store together, we’re creating a destination where customers can buy products, organize their spaces and design custom solutions,” CEO Marcus Lemonis said in a statement.

Why did Bed Bath & Beyond close?

Bed Bath & Beyond filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April 2023 after declining sales and unsuccessful turnaround efforts. The company liquidated its inventory and closed hundreds of stores nationwide by mid-2023, including Buybuy Baby locations.

In June 2023, Overstock.com acquired Bed Bath & Beyond’s intellectual property, including its brand and customer data, for about $21.5 million. Overstock later rebranded as Bed Bath & Beyond.

Before closing, the retailer had dozens of locations in New York.

Company executives say the new store format is part of a broader effort to rebuild the brand and rethink how customers shop for home products.
