Just two seasons ago, former four-star quarterback prospect Marcel Reed took center stage on the road vs. Florida during Texas A&M’s 2024 campaign, which also served as coach Mike Elko’s first season at the helm.
Due to quarterback Conner Weigman’s shoulder injury, Reed, making his first career start, shocked the nation by leading the Aggies to their second win in the Swamp since joining the SEC, defeating the Gators 33-20 behind his 178 passing yards and two touchdowns, combined with 83 rushing yards and a score.
After outright earning the starting job the rest of the way, Conner Weigman transferring to Houston was the right move for the former five-star signal caller, vaulting Marcel Reed into the driver’s seat, and leading to the offseason additions of transfer wide receivers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver.
During his first full starting season, Reed vastly improved in the pocket, becoming an early-season Heisman Trophy candidate, and passing for a career-high 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, and continued to thrive as a runner with 493 rushing yards and six scores.
Entering the 2026 campaign, expectations have risen for the redshirt junior, who should still be considered one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the country. Well, that is apparently up for debate for some, as popular college football analyst CFBudge did not include Marcel Reed in his “Top 10 Dual Threat Quarterbacks in College Football” list.
While it’s fair to criticize Reed’s performance in back-to-back losses to Texas and Miami in the first round of the College Football Playoff, leaving him off a list that includes players like Colton Joseph, who transferred from Old Dominion to Wisconsin this offseason, doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
