Six people were killed and more than 70 others were displaced after a three-alarm fire tore through a motel in Broome County on Monday morning.
Fire engulfs Endwell motel
Emergency crews were called to the Knights Inn at 2603 E. Main St. in Endwell shortly after 6 a.m., according to New York State Police.
Heavy black smoke poured from the building as flames rapidly spread through the two-story motel, eventually burning through the roof. Firefighters from at least 10 departments responded and worked for several hours to bring the blaze under control.
The fire was largely contained by about 9:45 a.m., though smoke remained visible from the scene.
Six people killed, dozens displaced
State Police spokesperson Trooper Aga Tinker confirmed Monday afternoon that six people died in the fire. Authorities have not released the victims’ identities, and no additional information about injuries was immediately available.
“First and foremost, our deepest thoughts and continuous prayers are with the victims and their families who were impacted by this morning’s tragic events,” the Endwell Fire Department said in a statement. “Please know that our entire department and community stand with you during this incredibly difficult time.”
Motel housed people experiencing homelessness
The Knights Inn had been used by the Broome County Department of Social Services as emergency housing for people experiencing homelessness.
A volunteer with the American Red Cross estimated that 73 residents were displaced by the fire. Vestal United Methodist Church was opened as a temporary shelter for those affected, Tinker said.
Community support quickly followed. More than $19,000 was donated Monday through an emergency relief fund established by the United Way of Broome County to assist displaced residents.
Many of those who escaped the fire lost all of their belongings, including clothing, medications and other necessities.
Investigation underway
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire. No information about what may have sparked the blaze has been released.
