Scoreless through five
Brandon Woodruff retired the first 15 Reds he faced as both starters put up zeroes through five innings.
Woodruff got behind each of the first four hitters he faced, including 3-0 to the first two batters of the game, but got a pair of flyouts and a strikeout for a clean first. He added a pair of strikeouts looking in the second as his velocity ticked up to the 92 mph range.
He got two more hard-hit air outs in the third before striking out Matt McClain with a 92.7 mph heater.
Milwaukee’s offense, meanwhile, stranded three and was 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position through four. In the second, William Contreras and Jake Bauers walked with nobody out and were stranded, then in the fourth a Brice Turang leadoff double went for naught.
Woodruff began to feel it in the fourth, reaching back for his best velocity of the day. He averaged 93 mph with the sinker in another 1-2-3 frame which he capped with strikeouts number five and six of the day.
His best pitch of the start came to cap the fifth, a backdoored two-seamer with 22 inches of horizontal run on the eighth pitch of the at-bat with Eugenio Suárez. It was Woodruff’s eighth punch out of hte night.
He was matched pitch for pitch by Reds starter Brady Singer, who despite entering with a 5.32 ERA and 5.79 expected ERA based on batted ball events. Turang’s double was Milwaukee’s lone hit through five innings against Singer, who didn’t allow a single hard-hit ball.
