What happens to Dusty May contract, buyout now that he's headed to NBA

What happens to Dusty May’s contract now that he is leaving Michigan basketball for the Dallas Mavericks?

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said during the Wolverines’ championship celebration on April 11 that May had reached an agreement on a contract extension. Details weren’t released, but Manuel said it would make his coach “the leader of this basketball team for many years to come.”

In February 2025, May signed a new contract with Michigan in which the deal ran through 2030 with a base salary of $4.6 million. It offered a $250,000 increase each season, according to his contract obtained by USA TODAY Sports.

May told the Detroit Free Press on Wednesday, June 17, the post-title new contract agreement had not been signed, with details still being ironed out.

“Two days ago, I had a discussion about a couple details, and a week before that had a couple discussions about details,” May said.

Is the plan still to go forward with the new contract?

“Yeah. I mean … I don’t even understand the issues with contracts because it’s like the contracts are only as good as the buyout,” May said. “But there’s active negotiations, minor details. … I don’t spend much time thinking about it and talking about it.”
