The name Juneteenth is short for “June Nineteenth,” and it commemorates the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take control of the state and enforce the emancipation of all people who were enslaved.
This event occurred two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
Juneteenth became a federal holiday on June 17, 2021. It is also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day or Emancipation Day.

Juneteenth is considered a bank holiday, according to the Federal Reserve.
Does mail get delivered on Juneteenth?
The United States Postal Service will be closed on Friday, June 19. Regular mail delivery and retail services will resume on Saturday, June 20.
Are markets open on Juneteenth?
Yes, the New York Stock Exchange will be closed for Juneteenth.
Is HEB open on Juneteenth?
Yes, H-E-B stores will be open on Juneteenth. Locations will operate on regular store hours.
Are schools closed on Juneteenth?
Yes, schools will be closed on the federal holiday.
Is Costco open on Juneteenth?
Costco will be open from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Is Sam’s open on Juneteenth?
Sam’s Club will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
