SPRINGFIELD, IL – The federal holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States will mean that various places around the city will be open and closed on Friday.
Juneteenth is June 19.
Government offices will be closed, for example, while other places like the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum will be open with free admission to help commemorate and celebrate the holiday.
Here’s a look at openings and closures in the capital city.
Tourist sites
The Illinois Capitol will be open for tours, on its regular weekend schedule — meaning that tours will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tours will be held every hour.
The Old State Capitol will be open. A Juneteenth art exhibition, noir 6, will be up until Oct. 16. The exhibition is comprised of Black art that depicts the life and times of Black-Americans.
The Lincoln Tomb will be open.
The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum will be open on Juneteenth and admission will be free. The Emancipation Proclamation will be on display in the library building until 6:30 p.m. ALPLM will host a free screening of “Glory” at 6:30.
The Emancipation Proclamation will be on display from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays through June 19 in the library building. There is no charge to see the document.
Government offices and courts
State of Illinois offices and courts will be closed. That includes Driver Service Facilities (Department of Motor Vehicles).
Sangamon County offices and courts are closed for Juneteenth.
City of Springfield offices, including Lincoln Library, will be closed Friday.
Federal offices and courts will be closed.
All post offices will be closed for retail transactions and there will be no regular residential or business mail deliveries on June 19.
Schools
Springfield School District 186 offices and summer programs will be closed.
Offices at the University of Illinois Springfield campus will be closed, and classes will be out of session.
The campuses of Lincoln Land Community College will be closed, with classes out of session.
Midwest Technical Institute will be open.
