Eight finalists emerge for boys Athlete of the Year, presented by Happy State Bank

Beginning in September, the Amarillo Globe-News recognized some of the top high school performances by soliciting nominations and naming finalists for the Happy State Bank High School Athlete of the Week.

Weekly voting lasted throughout the school year and produced 35 Athletes of the Week.

Now readers will have a chance to choose from those honorees to name a Happy State Bank Fan Favorite High School Athlete of the Year.

Voting will be broken down over multiple weeks beginning June 1 and will run Monday through Thursday each week, alternating weeks between boys finalists and girls finalists.

The eight athletes who received the most votes this week advance to the final round of voting.

Amarillo High’s Landon Barker (3,939) led the second round of voting, followed by Canadian’s Joseph Dominguez (3,276) and and Caprock’s Alan Carrasco (988).

Voting totals will reset each week.

The athletes represent schools of every size across the area.

Each athlete is listed in order of votes received in the first round of voting. The final round of voting for Happy State Bank boys high school athlete of the year will begin Monday, June 29. The second round of the Happy State Bank girls high school athlete of the year will begin Monday, June 22.

• Ga’Quorie Chatham, Dimmitt baseball — 491

• Tharcisse Butoyi, Palo Duro boys soccer — 359

• Alejandro Casas, Stratford football — 137

• David Abeyta, Tulia baseball — 98

• Austin Turner, Canyon football — 81

10,003 total votes

Submit nominees, with stats, honors and accolades from the previous week by Saturday each week to sports@amarillo.com.
