“Dutton Ranch,” set after the events of the “Yellowstone” series finale, follows Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) and Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly), who flee Montana after a life-altering, destructive wildfire and settle down on a ranch of their own in South Texas.
“Dutton Ranch” is one of two “Yellowstone” spinoffs to launch in 2026. “Marshals,” which premiered on CBS in March, focuses on Beth’s brother Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes).

The series follows the couple as they begin a new life in South Texas after leaving the original Dutton land following a destructive wildfire. In the new series, Dutton and Wheeler manage a sprawling ranch in the Lone Star State while navigating ongoing threats, financial pressure, rival operations and raising their surrogate son, Carter.

According to USA TODAY, “Dutton Ranch” was shot primarily outdoors around north-central Texas, near creator Taylor Sheridan’s studio outside Fort Worth.
Is Taylor Sheridan involved with ‘Dutton Ranch’?
Yes, Taylor Sheridan is the executive producer of “Dutton Ranch.” Although he was the sole writer credited on “Yellowstone” and its two prequels, “1883” and “1923,” Paramount tapped writer and producer Chad Feehan to serve as the creator and showrunner of “Dutton Ranch,” per MarketWatch.
However, TechRadar reported Feehan left “Dutton Ranch” in April, just weeks before the series aired, due to alleged “behind-the-scenes friction” with Hauser, Reilly and other “key players.”

What’s wrong with the cow in ‘Dutton Ranch’?
During season 1, episode 3, of “Dutton Ranch,” Azul, a ranch hand and wrangler, took Rip Wheeler to see a sick bull, whom he shot and killed with his rifle, per Decider. It was later revealed the bull had foot and mouth disease (FMD), which the USDA defines as “a severe, fast-spreading viral disease that primarily affects cloven-hoofed animals, including cows, pigs, sheep, goats and deer.”
The USDA adds that FMD is “one of the most challenging animal diseases to control.” While survival rates are high, infected animals are left weak and unable to produce high levels of meat and milk.
‘Dutton Ranch’ rattlesnake issue explained
Cole Hauser revealed on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” on May 19 that the crew’s snake wranglers caught 3,400 rattlesnakes while filming for “Dutton Ranch” season 1, which lasted approximately eight months. Kelly Reilly added that there were as many as six snake wranglers on set at one point.

Finn Little, a 19-year-old actor from Brisbane, Australia, plays Carter, the surrogate son of Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton. Little has also appeared in the following TV shows and movies: “Yellowstone,” “Those Who Wish Me Dead,” “Storm Boy” and “Angel of Mine.”

Why did the Sheriff kill Dwight on ‘Dutton Ranch’?
According to Decider, Carter was hanging out with Dwight during season 1, episode 5, of “Dutton Ranch,” when he noticed police lights flashing in the distance. Dwight made a run for it, screaming, “F—ing skunks at our lawn party!”
Sheriff Wade chased after Dwight and shot him in the back. He also pointed his rifle at Carter and was prepared to shoot him when another officer tackled Carter to the ground.
Sheriff Wade claimed he shot Dwight because he had a knife, but Carter claimed that he saw Dwight’s blade “safely stored in its holder,” the site adds.
