South Bend Venues Parks & Arts new executive director takes over role

SOUTH BEND — Erin Thornton has been appointed the new executive director of Venues Parks and Arts, according to a press release issued June 12 by the city.

She replaces Jordan Gathers, who left in May after three years as both acting executive director and executive director of VPA, according to previous Tribune reporting.

Thornton, who served as the interim executive director after Gathers’ departure, has worked for VPA since 2025 as the chief experience officer. In that role, she oversaw a newly established Visitor Experience division and unified custodial, safety and service-focused operations, according to a press release.

“The opportunity to lead the fantastic team at South Bend Venues Parks and Arts is both humbling and thrilling,” Thornton said in the press release. “I’ve been a resident of this community for over a decade, a frequent visitor to our parks and public spaces and I can think of nothing more meaningful than championing the people and work that bring the spaces and experiences to life.”

Thornton’s first day as executive director was Monday, June 15.

Before joining VPA, she worked at the University of Notre Dame, where she directed large-scale events for the Alumni Association and later served as an executive level advisor. She earned her degree in architecture from Penn State University in 2005. According to the press release, her degree grounds “her work in a deep understanding of how design, place, and experience intersect.”

“I am excited for Erin to step into this leadership role at Venues Parks & Arts and build upon the foundation of excellence,” South Bend Mayor James Mueller said in the press release. “Bringing a background in visitor experience and public service, Erin will continue to create welcoming public spaces and meaningful experiences that empower our community to thrive.”
