With minicamp behind us, let’s break down the Indianapolis Colts’ roster through a different lens.
In this series, we will be going position-by-position and placing each player into a category — are they a roster lock or on the bubble?
What this exercise can do is help bring into focus how many roster spots are actually available this summer, along with highlighting who may be on the outside and looking in.
Up next is the offensive line.
Roster locks (7): Bernhard Raimann, Quenton Nelson, Tanor Bortolini, Matt Goncalves, Jalen Travis, Jalen Farmer, Dalton Tucker
Of course, there is the Colts’ projected starting five, and also a part of this group is Jalen Farmer, who the team took in the fourth round of this year’s draft.
Perhaps it’s a bit assumptive to have Tucker in the ‘roster lock’ category, but he does have some NFL experience, and there isn’t a lot of that on the Colts’ offensive line depth chart beyond the starters, not to mention that he could be the favorite to be Bortolini’s backup at center. I just can’t envision him not being on the team for those reasons.
On the bubble (8): Josh Kreutz, Jimmy Morrissey, Geno VanDeMark, Josh Sills, Bayron Matos, Nolan Rucci, Blake Freeland, Luke Tenuta
With seven roster spots accounted for, that leaves two to three up for grabs. Between offensive tackles Matos, Rucci, Freeland, and Tenuta, I would guess that two of those players will make the initial 53-man roster to bolster the depth at that position, with both Farmer and Tucker being interior players.
Whether or not the Colts go heavy here and keep a 10th lineman will be dependent upon someone standing out over the summer.
