One person dead after crash involving COTA bus on Columbus East Side

The Columbus police Accident Investigation Unit is on the scene of a fatal traffic crash June 17 involving a Central Ohio Transit Authority bus and another vehicle.

A Columbus dispatcher said the crash occurred at 7:18 p.m. at the intersection of Stelzer Road and Allegheny Avenue, which is on the city’s East Side near the Columbus VA Medical Center and Columbus Africentric Early College High School, and close to the western border of the city of Whitehall.

The driver of the other vehicle was transported in critical condition to a local hospital, where they were later pronounced dead at 8:09 p.m., the police dispatcher said. The name of the individual will not be released by Columbus police until confirmation of identity and the family is notified.

COTA spokesman Jeff Pullin said preliminary information made available to him indicated the crash involved a pickup truck which had reportedly rear-ended a COTA bus that was stopped for a traffic light.

There were no injuries aboard the bus, Pullin said.

Southbound traffic on Stelzer Road was closed while the accident scene was being investigated by police.

No further information about the crash was immediately available from police.
