SOUTH BEND — A South Bend police officer shot and killed a suspect who was allegedly armed and in violation of an active protective custody order Tuesday night, June 16.
According to a press release from the St. Joseph County Police Department, at 9:20 p.m., officers responded to a call at the 400 block of Corby Boulevard for an allegedly armed man outside a residence “despite an active protective order.”
An “incidence unfolded,” the release said. Jujaun Bates, the 35-year-old suspect, allegedly left the 400 block and officers “attempted multiple methods to stop him, but those efforts were unsuccessful.”
A SBPD officer shot Bates and he was taken to a local hospital where he later died.
County police are leading the investigation — in accordance with a memorandum of understanding — and the Mishawaka Police Department is handling evidence collection and documentation.
The release said there were multipule SBPD officers involved and the area coverage is expansive.
“The investigation will require extensive evidence collection, scene(s) processing and witness interviews by Detectives and Evidence Technicians,” the release said.
