Meet the Hamilton man behind Knife N' Sharp

“Holland In Photos,” a series shot by Sentinel photographer Adam Vander Kooy, highlights the extra-ordinary happenings of your neighbors.

HAMILTON — For more than a decade, Bernie Engels has spent his days bringing dull knives back to life at West Michigan farmers markets.

The owner of Knife N’ Sharp started the business after leaving a 20-year career as a physical therapist assistant. The idea came from his wife, who noticed a problem in their own kitchen.

“Our knives are always so dull,” Engels recalled her saying. “Why don’t you start a knife sharpening business?”

That was enough for Engels to jump into action, learning the craft and eventually traveling to New Buffalo, Michigan for a full course on the subject.

By the following spring, Engels began reaching out to local farmers markets. He eventually found a spot in Saugatuck before later bringing Knife N’ Sharp to the Holland Farmers Market.

Now in his 12th year, Engels sharpens knives, garden tools and scissors from his Hamilton shop and at the Holland Farmers Market.
