NCAA officially files 'accelerated appeal' in Brendan Sorsby case

As expected, the NCAA is fighting back in the case against the Texas Tech Red Raiders and quarterback Brendan Sorsby.

On Monday morning, Sorsby was granted an injunction by a local appeals court, making him eligible to play in the 2026 season after his eligibility was revoked following a gambling scandal in which the QB reportedly placed over $90,000 in bets, including on his own team.

District Judge Ken Curry ruled Monday morning that Sorsby “will suffer a probable, imminent and irreparable injury if this Court does not issue this temporary injunction” to allow him to participate in Texas Tech’s upcoming football season.

It didn’t take long for news to come out that the NCAA is appealing this ruling.

According to multiple reports, the NCAA has officially filed an “accelerated appeal” with the Court of Appeals for the Seventh District of Texas. It’s also worth noting that all four justices in the Court of Appeals for the Seventh District of Texas are Texas Tech alums.

Sorsby entered an inpatient gambling rehab facility earlier this spring after it came out that he gambled on his team’s games while a member of the Indiana football program in 2022, and placed several thousand wagers for more than $90,000 over the past several years.

Sorsby is set to serve a two-game suspension to start the year, missing Texas Tech’s games against Abilene Christian and Oregon State.

There is a precedent for a temporary injunction to be overturned. Back in January of this year, Charles Bediako was granted a temporary 10-day restraining order allowing him to play for the Alabama Crimson Tide after the NCAA initially deemed him ineligible for his participation in the NBA G League. However, the Tuscaloosa Circuit Court denied the preliminary injunction two weeks later, revoking Bediako’s eligibility.

We will see how this plays out in the Sorsby case, but it’s clear at this point that much more news is set to come in the following days and weeks.
