The news of a temporary injunction being granted on Monday for Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby reverberated across the college football landscape, and it certainly had plenty of Athletic Directors up in arms. So much so, they were willing to let the record reflect that they are having “serious” talks about not playing Texas Tech in the 2026 season. Texas Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt issued his own statement, reiterating the school’s original position on the NCAA’s ruling and further supporting Sorsby as he is set to rejoin the Red Raider football team. With reactions pouring in over what could be a landmark shift in all of NCAA athletics, the Big 12 commissioner, Brett Yormark, also issued a statement on the temporary injunction. Ross Dellenger of Yahoo! Sports shared the commissioner’s statement on X.
“The ramifications of today’s ruling are significant and could have broad impacts across college athletics, creating great concern amongst our membership. I’ve been consulting with our key stakeholders and have scheduled meetings with our Conference ADs and Executive Board this week. We are also in touch with Charlie Baker and anticipate the NCAA to appeal the order in the next 24-48 hours. We will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation.
Brett Yormark finds himself in a tough position again, having drawn criticism from Texas Tech’s most prominent booster for moving the Houston game to a Friday night. While Texas Tech has positioned itself as everyone’s new favorite villain of college sports, the Red Raiders have also set themselves in position to be the flag-bearing conference of the Big 12 for the foreseeable future. However, the other 15 athletic directors that Yormark answers to in the Big 12 are fuming over the ruling allowing Sorsby to play.
Yormark’s statement made it clear that he will continue conversations with all appropriate parties. His office will also stay up to date with this evolving situation. Should it become clear that Sorsby will be playing the entirety of the 2026 season (after his 2-game suspension), Yormark will be in the unenviable position of having to address this for the rest of the year. But as Don Draper would say, “That’s what the money is for!”
