Notre Dame fans familiar with legend Skylar Diggins will not be surprised about the star voicing her frustrations after another Chicago Sky loss on Sunday.
Diggins used her postgame podium to question her team’s maturity, leadership and offensive direction and let out her frustrations in regards to the latest season in her storied career. For Irish fans, the edge in her voice probably sounded on-brand for the vocal star.
After the Sky fell to the expansion Toronto Tempo 85-68 on Sunday, adding another loss to what has been a sluggish start to the season. Diggins did not make excuses in saying this was a one-off bad night, and instead seemed to suggest this was a systematic problem. “We’ve got to have more maturity and more leadership on and off the floor, from the players on the floor and from the staff as well, and more connectivity,” she said at the postgame podium. “If it was just one versus one team, I’d understand that, but now it’s struggles versus a trend of ours.”
Diggins was not shy in spreading out the blame. When a reporter asked about Chicago’s half-court offensive execution, Diggins cut short the question and said “That’s a Tyler question. Ask Tyler,” directing the inquiry towards Chicago Sky head coach Tyler Marsh. From a multiple-time All-Star in her 14th season, Diggins’ interruption seemed less like a deflection and more like a public demand of tactical answers from the bench.
For Notre Dame fans, this candor is not a surprise. Diggins built her legacy in South Bend on competitiveness, blunt honesty and a refusal to accept moral victories. It was because of those traits within her she was able to lead the Irish to multiple Final Fours. In Chicago, that same competitive fire is colliding with a young roster and a franchise still trying to find its’ own identity and get out of the funk of multiple straight losing seasons.
