A man died June 7 after a fall while hiking near the Punch Bowl area outside Santa Paula, authorities said.

The call was quickly handed over to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, which confirmed their deputies are investigating the death as an accident, said Capt. Aaron Grass.

Deputies arrived around 12:45 p.m. and learned the man fell. He had been part of a group, and the hikers were on Last Chance Trail, Grass said.

The sheriff’s captain said the death is being investigated by detectives with the major crimes unit, which is normal for similar deaths. The captain said deputies do not believe there are suspicious circumstances.

In addition to deputies, search and rescue volunteers and the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office were also at the scene, Grass said.
