Should the Nets pick up Day'Ron Sharpe's $6.25 million team option?

Brooklyn Nets center Day’Ron Sharpe is one of the players on the roster that could be a free-agent this summer and the Nets will have to decide if they will let him test the market. Sharpe has a team option for the 2026-27 season worth $6.25 million so should Brooklyn pick up that option to prevent him from being signed by another team in free-agency?

“If those talks happen and if it goes down that way, that’s probably a good problem to have. And I give Day’Ron a lot of credit because he embraced the summer work last year,” Nets general manager Sean Marks said of Sharpe in his exit interview in April. Marks was asked for his opinion on Sharpe’s development as a player amid the backdrop of him playing some of his best basketball over the past few seasons.

“In his exit meeting this year, I don’t think I’m speaking out of turn, but he said he wants to come back an even better, improved player,” Marks continued on Sharpe. “So when that’s what he wants to embark on and that’s how he’s motivated, I think that’s great. That’s great for us. “When he’s motivated by the summer and got a taste for more minutes, more opportunity, bigger expectations — you see his body change, you’ve seen the confidence change on the court.”

Sharpe, 24, had another solid season as the backup center to Nic Claxton as he averaged 8.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 60.1% from the field and 67.8% from the free-throw line. Sharpe achieved many per-game career-highs thanks to how well he played off the bench and he also showed more of his skillset, including his passing and three-point shooting.

Given how valuable Sharpe is as a center, not just to the Nets, but also in the NBA, Brooklyn should have an easy decision to make when it comes to picking up his team option. There is still plenty of matters to address over the course of the offseason, but the Nets have seen Sharpe develop into a key member of its rotation and as such, he should remain with the organization heading into next season.
