17 calves worth $41,000 stolen from Genesee County farm, two charged

Two Niagara County residents have been arrested after investigators say 17 Holstein heifer calves were stolen from a farm in Genesee County.

According to the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, the calves were taken overnight May 24 from an open barn at a farm in the town of Oakfield.

Suspects arrested in Jamestown

Investigators identified Torrence A. Schmitt, 25, and Kerisa J. Schmitt, 26, both of Lockport, as suspects in the theft.

The pair were arrested June 3 in Jamestown with assistance from the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office and transported to the Genesee County Jail.

Charges include burglary and grand larceny

The Schmitts face multiple charges, including:

Deputies said the stolen calves had an estimated value of more than $41,000.

Identification tags allegedly removed

Investigators allege the suspects removed identification tags from 16 of the calves in an effort to conceal evidence and interfere with livestock records.

Court appearance

Both defendants appeared in CAP Court in Batavia on June 4. Additional court proceedings are pending.

The investigation remains ongoing.
