Kristaps Porzingis was a solid pickup for the Golden State Warriors at the trade deadline, averaging 16.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.1 blocks and 0.6 steals in 15 appearances. Although he’s struggled to stay healthy in recent seasons, playing less than 60 games in five of the last six years, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr revealed a desire to retain Porzingis as the Latvian center reaches unrestricted free agency.
Recently, NBA insider Jake Fischer corroborated this information, reporting that Golden State is “hopeful they can re-sign Kristaps Porziņģis on more of a cap-friendly deal after absorbing his $30.7 million expiring contract from Atlanta on deadline day in February.”
If Porzingis were to re-sign on a cap-friendly deal, it’d make building around former two-time MVP Stephen Curry that much easier and might entice other free agents to join the Warriors. However, if Porzingis were offered more money by other teams on the market, it wouldn’t come as a surprise, given his tremendous upside when healthy.
