Workers at a former church in Bay City uncovered a human skull on Thursday, June 4, the Bay City Department of Public Safety said.
Police say no foul play is suspected. The skull was at the site where it was found for years, and is not from a recently deceased person, Bay City Police Captain Nathan Webster said.
Contractors working at the intersection of Smith and State streets, near the former site of Our Lady of the Visitation Church, north of downtown, found the skull and notified officers at approximately 10:08 a.m. Thursday, police said.
Police are working with the Diocese of Saginaw and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to determine the origin of the skull and what to do with the remains, Webster said.
