Man charged after March shooting in Stockton kills man, 69

A man was charged Thursday in connection with the deadly March shooting of another man in Stockton.

Daniel Paradiso, 44, appeared in a Stockton courtroom for the first time to hear the charges against him following his arrest on June 1.

Paradiso is charged with murder of 69-year-old Jack Wesby Jr. on March 22 and being a felon and addict in possession of a firearm.

He also faces an allegation of intentionally discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury and death.

Wesby Jr. was found with gunshot wounds at about 1:50 p.m., on the day of the shooting, in the area of South El Dorado Street and East Hazelton Avenue.

Stockton police said Wesby Jr. was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Sockton police said they were able to identify Paradiso as the suspect in the case and issued a warrant for his arrest. He was arrested by the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office during a traffic stop.

During the arraignment, more than three people sat behind the prosecution in the courtroom. They left the hearing once the arraignment was over and walked out with the prosecutor.

Paradiso asked San Joaquin County Superior Court Judge Chrishna Martinez for an appointed attorney which she granted.

Martinez said Paradiso had holds in both Placer and Nevada counties.

She said bail was not allowed for the defendant and ordered him to return to court on June 10.

Before the hearing concluded, Paradiso told his public defender and the judge that he wanted to address the issue of allegedly not being allowed to make phone calls from the jail.

Paradiso said he needed to call his family because they did not know where he was.

Martinez said she would address the phone calls at the next hearing.
