Scholarship details

Sponsor colleges selected winners from finalists in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institutions. Awards range from $500 to $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.

Another group of scholars will be announced in July, bringing the total number of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship recipients in the 2026 competition to about 3,500. This year, 138 colleges and universities in 42 states and the District of Columbia are sponsoring awards.

About the program

College-sponsored winners are part of a group of about 6,700 seniors expected to receive National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $24 million for undergraduate study.

Students entered the 2026 competition by taking the 2024 PSAT/NMSQT. More than 16,000 semifinalists were named last fall, and more than 15,000 advanced to finalist standing.

The National Merit Scholarship Corp., founded in 1955, operates the program with support from corporate and college sponsors.
