One person is dead after a semi-truck and train collision that caused the train to derail in Poweshiek County.
The Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a train accident around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3 on Highway 21 near Victor, Iowa, according to a news release from Sheriff Matt Maschmann.
One occupant of the semi-truck that was involved in the crash died at the scene, Maschmann said. Another occupant was transported by Life Flight with serious injuries. Neither identity has been released by authorities.
The train in the crash was an Iowa Interstate Railroad train, according to Maschmann. A spokesperson for Iowa Interstate Railroad was not immediately available for comment.
Responders continue to secure the scene, Maschmann said.
Two power engines and 17 train cars were affected by the crash, according to Maschmann. All train cars were derailed, and the rails sustained “significant damage,” Maschmann said.
The Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office, the Victor Fire Department, the Brooklyn Fire Department, the Grinnell Fire Department, East Poweshiek Ambulance, Montezuma Ambulance, Poweshiek County Emergency Management, Iowa County Emergency Management, and the Iowa State Patrol.
Highway 21 between Highway 6 and Old 6 Road is closed until the scene is managed and the investigation, conducted by the Iowa State Patrol, is completed.
