Detroit just locked up another one of its young pieces as a long-term star in linebacker Jack Campbell.
Campbell inked a four-year $81 million contract extension. But, the Lions have a trio of other young stars up for contract extensions that the organization will want to finalize deals with, too.
In its look at 10 remaining offseason nuggets, ESPN zeroed in on the Lions’ veteran extensions.
They got Jack Campbell’s deal done, but they have three other 2023 draft picks they want to extend, ideally before the 2026 season. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs could be playing chicken with Atlanta’s Bijan Robinson to see who sets the top of that market, so that could take a while. But the Lions also want deals with tight end Sam LaPorta and safety Brian Branch. – Dan Graziano, ESPN
It’s not shocking to hear Graziano theorize that a Gibbs deal could take some time. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler indicated last week that Gibbs could reset the running back market, but does that mean that Detroit will have to wait until Atlanta finalizes a long-term deal with star back Bijan Robinson first?
Both are in line for massive paydays and there’s notoriety with getting to be the highest-paid player at your position. Currently, Eagles star Saquon Barkley is the NFL’s highest-paid running back with an average annual value of $20.6 million.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on the “Pat McAfee Show” recently that he thought the Lions would get a Gibbs deal done this summer.
Contract extensions for Gibbs, Sam LaPorta and Brian Branch will continue to be the talk of the summer.
