East Lansing's Coral Gables to close this month after a century

After two generations of ownership and around 100 years serving the East Lansing community, Coral Gables’ owners announced the historic restaurant and banquet hall is closing its doors.

The last day of service will be June 30.

“It is with great appreciation for our customers, employees, and the broader community that we announce the difficult decision to close,” reads a statement from owners Stuart Vanis, Anastasia and Grigoris Kimbouris and George Tesseris. “To all who have considered the Gables their home away from home — a place for family gatherings, meetings, celebrations, or simply a familiar spot to find friends — we extend our deepest gratitude for your loyalty and support. Serving you has been an honor, and we will sincerely miss the daily connections that have meant so much to us.”

According to Coral Gables’ website, the destination at 2838 Grand River was originally built in the 1920s. It burned down in 1957 and was rebuilt. It’s been run by the same family since 1968.

In its early years, the roadhouse-style restaurant hosted live bands like Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington and the Ink Spots. Throughout its run, Coral Gables was known as a popular hangout for Michigan State University students.
