A competency review for a 36-year-old Monroe woman facing manslaughter and child abuse charges related to her child’s death was suspended on Monday, June 1.
According to Coralan Peters’ defense lawyer, Leanna Belcher, she had not yet received the competency report. The review was rescheduled for June 25 at 2:30 p.m., though Judge Christian Horkey said that it would be scheduled earlier if the report was turned in before then.
Peters faces a charge of involuntary manslaughter after the death of her 20-month-old son on Dec. 23, 2025. That day, rescue crews were called to the home in the 1000 block of E. Sixth St., Monroe, about 9:48 a.m. to a report of a deceased child. Peters was arraigned Feb. 4 in Monroe County District Court.
She also faces a charge of second-degree child abuse. According to the Monroe County prosecutor’s office, the child was exposed to “an unsafe level of heat.”
Peters is being held at a $750,000 bond. Belcher requested bond be reduced, but Horkey said questions about Peters’ competency made him less inclined to do so.
