Who is Edwin Arroyo? Reds prospect starts at 2B, bats 8th in MLB debut

Infielder Edwin Arroyo made his MLB debut for the Cincinnati Reds, after the team called up the 22-year-old infielder from Triple-A Louisville as it placed star shortstop Elly De La Cruz on the injured list.

Arroyo started at second base and batted eighth in the team’s series opener against the Kansas City Royals at Great American Ball Park. He struck out in his first three plate appearances of the game, but recorded his first big-league hit on a single in the ninth inning.

This season at Louisville, Arroyo has played in 18 games at second base, four games at third base and 33 games at shortstop.

Arroyo’s 11th home run of the season for the Bats was an inside-the-park homer May 29. He was batting .323 for Louisville when he was promoted. Arroyo hit his 10th home run of the season while lifting the Bats to a 4-2 win on May 21 at Columbus’ Huntington Park.

Arroyo ranks third among MLB Pipeline’s top Reds prospects. On May 8, Arroyo homered twice to lift the Bats to a 9-6 win against Nashville.

What to know about Arroyo, who is wearing No. 2 for the Reds:

The Reds acquired Arroyo in a 2022 trade for Luis Castillo.

Castillo, who posted a 3.62 ERA in 137 starts for the Reds over parts of six seasons in Cincinnati, was sent at the 2022 trade deadline to the Seattle Mariners for Noelvi Marte, Arroyo, Andrew Moore and Levi Stoudt.

When the Reds acquired Arroyo, he was batting .316 with 19 doubles, 13 homers and seven triples in 87 games at Low-A Modesto, with 67 RBIs and 76 runs.

After the trade, Arroyo had a two-run double and two walks in his debut for the Low-A Daytona Tortugas.

The Reds announced in March 2024 that Arroyo would undergo season-ending surgery for a torn labrum.

Arroyo was the 48th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft.

The Seattle Mariners selected Arroyo in the second round. The Reds took pitcher Andrew Abbott five picks later, at No. 53 overall.

In the first round, the Twins selected Chase Petty, a pitching prospect the Reds acquired in a 2022 trade for Sonny Gray, nine picks after the Reds took Matt McLain 17th overall.

Arroyo is from Arecibo, Puerto Rico.

Arroyo played for Puerto Rico in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

At age 17, the switch-hitting Arroyo moved to Florida for his senior year of high school.

Two-time American League MVP and three-time All-Star Juan Gonzalez also was born in Arecibo.
