The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 15-year-old boy, who was shot by a Fraser public safety officer, during an incident that authorities say stemmed from a domestic dispute.
The sheriff’s office said in a release on Monday, June 1, that preliminary findings indicate the boy, whom they did not name, was armed with a knife during the incident. It also said body-worn camera footage confirmed that officers deployed Tasers in an attempt to use less-than-lethal force.
Fraser officers responded to the area of the 17000 block of Breezeway at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 30, for a report of a domestic dispute.
During the dispute, an officer fired, hitting the boy, according to a release from Fraser public safety. It said emergency medical assistance was immediately provided to the boy, who was taken to a local hospital, where he died. No officers were hurt.
The sheriff’s office declined to comment about how many Tasers were deployed; the number of times the boy was shocked; how many times he was shot or where on the body he was struck; details about the knife or whether the boy was harming himself or others at the time of the incident, spokeswoman Jennifer Putney said.
The officer who fired, who was also not named, was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation by the sheriff’s office, according to Fraser Public Safety. Putney did not release any additional details about the officer involved in the shooting.
The investigation is ongoing.
