A new law in Wisconsin that took effect Monday, June 1 requires all UTV drivers and passengers to wear seat belts.
The new requirement is one of a handful of law changes for ATV and UTV riders in Wisconsin, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

Can I drive an ATV or UTV on the streets?
You’re not allowed to operate an ATV on any freeway and most roads in Wisconsin, though there are some exceptions for agricultural purposes. There are also exceptions for races and derbies.
How many people have died in ATV and UTV crashes in 2026?
There have been 15 deaths as of June 1, according to the DNR. Many of the fatalities have involved rollover crashes.
In 2025, a total of 42 people died in ATV or UTV crashes in Wisconsin, up from 40 deaths in 2024.
