The No. 10-seeded Florida State Seminoles and St. John’s Red Storm will meet in the Tallahassee Regional Final on Monday at Dick Howser Stadium. FSU will have to win twice, with St. John’s needing just one win.
FSU (40-18) is looking for revenge after losing 6-5 on Friday to the Red Storm and falling into the losers’ bracket. They responded perfectly, beating Coastal Carolina and Northern Illinois on Sunday to advance to the final. While it hasn’t been pretty, they have done just enough to win and advance.
The Seminoles beat the Chanticleers 2-1 in the first game of the day before rallying to beat Northern Illinois 7-4 in 10 innings in the final game of the day. They have gotten excellent pitching as the offense has struggled to take advantage of scoring chances.
Cooper Whited, Chris Knier, and Brodie Purcell each pitched 3.1 innings against Northern Illinois. The trio held them to six hits and three walks with 15 strikeouts. Purcell did not allow a run to close out the game and earn the win. Trey Beard was dominant in the game against Coastal Carolina, pitching four shutout innings.
FSU’s offense had its best inning of the day in the 10th inning vs. Northern Illinois, with Ben Barrett blasting a two-run home run to give them several insurance runs. It was his second homer of the season and the first time they have scored three or more runs in an inning this regional.
