Palm Beach Police recently traveled to the nation’s capital to mark National Police Week.
Thanks to a donation from the Palm Beach Police & Fire Foundation, six officers, a lieutenant, a detective and a patrolman attended and took part the ceremonies in Washington, D.C., from May 13-16, Palm Beach Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Ogrodnick said.
They included Lt. Daniel Wilkinson; Detective Adam Zeller; Officers Frances Caro, Michael Castineiras, Anthony DeJesse, Louis Dilonardo, Mario Hluch and Cory Metelsky; and Patrolman Gabrio Badolati.
Ogrodnick said the department is grateful for the foundation’s support to send the Honor Guard to help honor fallen law-enforcement officers.
National Police Week takes place each May. It was first established in 1962, when President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and declared the calendar week in which that date falls as National Police Week, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Congress established National Police Week through a joint resolution that same year.
This year’s events included a candlelight vigil on the National Mall and the annual Pipeband Memorial March. On May 15, honor guards from departments throughout the country took 10-minute turns standing watch over the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
