After more than four decades in television meteorology, longtime Rochester forecaster Glenn Johnson is preparing to retire from broadcasting.
When is Glenn Johnson’s last day on air?
Johnson announced in a social media post that his final day on air at WHEC-TV will be June 24.
Glenn Johnson Reflects on 41-Year Career
Johnson, who joined WHEC-TV in July 2021, said he decided “to step back from television” after 41 years as a broadcast meteorologist.
“Through the decades, I’ve witnessed remarkable advances in the science of meteorology, and maybe along the way I have learned to get the forecast ‘right’ a little more often,” Johnson said.
He also reflected on advice from his late mentor, Bill Peterson.
“There is nothing like meteorology to keep you humble, and you never stop learning,” Johnson said, recalling Peterson’s words.
Johnson thanked his colleagues and viewers across Western New York.
“It has always been a joy and an honor to forecast the unique weather of Western New York,” he said.
Longtime Rochester TV Career
A New York native raised on Long Island, Johnson originally dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player for the New York Yankees before pursuing meteorology.
Johnson began his television career at WHAM-TV in 1985 as an intern while attending SUNY Brockport. He later became a part-time meteorologist and eventually moved into weekend and weekday morning forecasting roles.
In 2001, Johnson was named chief meteorologist at WHAM-TV, succeeding Peterson.
He spent 36 years at the station before being laid off in May 2021. Weeks later, he joined WHEC-TV.
Teaching and Retirement Plans
Beyond television, Johnson taught meteorology courses at Monroe Community College and regularly visited local schools to share his passion for weather.
Johnson said retirement will allow him to spend more time with his wife, Eileen, their two sons and three grandchildren.
“Nothing like Papa and Grandma time,” he said.
He also plans to travel, including a trip to the Greek Islands later this year, and spend time working on his 1968 Chevy Chevelle.
