Guided walk in Chili marks National Trails Day celebration

Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway will celebrate National Trails Day on June 6 with a guided walk and several talks in Chili.

The event will begin at 1 p.m. on Lock No. 2 of the Genesee Valley Canal, along the Genesee Valley Greenway about one mile south of Brook Road in Chili.

Christopher Romanchock, a local historian and an Alfred University adjunct professor, will discuss the canal’s construction and operation, and Alfred State College of Technology professor Stephen Richard will explain the hand-built methods used to create its massive stone structures. Brian Nagel from Genesee Country Village and Museum will describe what work was like for a lock tender. State Park educator Jules Hoepting will lead a walk through the lock’s 90-foot-long, 15-foot-wide chamber.

Refreshments will be served.

Parking is available at Brookdale Preserve, 66 Brook Road, which is a 20-minute walk from the lock. There is no vehicle access at the lock.

Picnic tables are available, and participants should feel free to bring a lawn chair and lunch to enjoy before the presentation.

National Trails Day, which has been held annually since 1992, is organized by the American Hiking Society to celebrate and protect U.S. trail systems.
