Here's how the Florida Gators can close the SEC gap next season

With the arrival of new head coach Jon Sumrall and a renovated roster, the Gators are searching for a path back to SEC contention. For Sumrall and his staff, this journey will begin in three key areas.

First, Florida must develop consistency on offense. In 2025, the Gators offense was incredibly volatile week-to-week — ultimately, Florida ended the season producing just 21.6 points per game. Lacking was the vertical passing attack and breakdowns along the offensive line.

The biggest improvement, however, must be third-down efficiency. New offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner must find ways to gain positive yards on early downs and create more manageable third-down situations. Conversions lead to longer drives, which will help Faulkner’s high-tempo offense find rhythm.

Second, the Gators have to produce turnovers and turn those into quick points. New defensive coordinator Brad White arrives in Gainesville after helping Kentucky routinely rank among the nation’s top scoring defense from 2018 through 2025.

Florida’s defense struggled mightily last season, most notably with generating pressure. In multiple games, including the home loss to South Florida, the Gators were unable to produce more than one sack. Initiating pressure will knock opposing quarterbacks off script and platform, making turnovers easier to come by.

Finally, Florida has to continue what it’s been doing on the recruiting trail. The Gators are stacking elite talent under Sumrall, already signing 12 blue-chip prospects in the 2027 cycle. The class includes five-star offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller, who is the cycle’s top-ranked OL. Securing game changers in the trenches will help the Orange and Blue reshape its SEC reputation.
