Find New England-style hot dogs at downtown Daytona Beach restaurant

Tucked right off of bustling Beach Street, Bay Street Dawgs feels like the kind of spot built for simple summer cravings done right.

The New England-style eatery centers its menu around 10-inch Hummel Bros. “dawgs” served on warm split-top buns, each toasted just enough to add structure without losing its soft center.

Here, the menu keeps things approachable but far from boring.

Alongside its all-beef, steamed burgers and seafood rolls, the restaurant houses nearly a dozen crave-worthy dawgs, from the popular Reuben with Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing, to the Junkyard Dawg — my recent favorite — pairing grilled onions, mushrooms and peppers with house chili and cheese sauce.

Those with a different flavor combo in mind can build their own hot dog with a slew of signature toppings and condiments to choose from, including homemade hot, mild or sweet relish, chili, sauerkraut, bacon or Asian slaw.

From 8-inch “red hots,” described as a shorter, thicker, natural casing hot dog with a peppery kick, to sweet Italian sausage and classic brats with brown mustard, there are plenty of options — and team members are happy to explain each item and recommend the perfect pairings.

Speaking of, a side of Bay Street Dawgs’ steak fries doesn’t disappoint, but its crispy fried onion petals paired with house Bay Street sauce are unmatched.

Grab your meal to go or take it out back to the shop’s small patio setup — a collection of umbrella-shaded picnic tables, rotating fans and soft string lights.

Bay Street Dawgs is located at 108 Bay St. in Daytona Beach and is open from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday. For information, call 386-492-7589 or visit facebook.com/baystreetdawgs.
