The Dallas Cowboys will host their first full organized team activity (OTA) of the offseason on June 1 as they bring rookie and veteran alike to The Star. It will be welcome sight to the longing eyes of the fanbase who are eager to replace the nightmarish images of 2025.
The Cowboys front office will likely have their eyes on an entirely different thing that day, as June 1 represents a financial pivot point in the NFL offseason.
On the first day of June, NFL teams can release or trade players with minimized immediate financial consequences. The summer date allows teams to ration a larger percentage of dead money into the future offseason, making it a popular cut and trade date for high-priced veterans.
Positions like linebacker and running back are both shallow and unproven in Dallas. If the right veteran becomes available, either by trade or by outright release, the Cowboys front office could be interested. Alvin Kamara, the long-time New Orleans Saints running back, could be available. With Javonte Williams as the only truly proven rusher on the Cowboys an argument could be made Kamara fits if the price is right.
Jordyn Brooks, a Miami Dolphins linebacker, could be available as well. Miami is rebuilding and just loaded up at the linebacker position in the draft. He could be placed on the trade block, or he may be cut outright. Like Kamara, Brooks would put many nervous minds at ease with his addition.
The Cowboys would love to sit back and see what they have internally first, but OTAs offer very little in the way of assessment. Even the early summer mini camps are more about process, rhythm and avoiding injury than anything. For the Cowboys to get a true gauge on what they have internally, it will have to happen in training camp in late July, and that could be too late to do anything about it.
The Cowboys will probably do what they do best and play this situation opportunistically. They’ll sit back and see if a bargain can be had.
