The top of the Charles Schwab Challenge remains crowded heading into Round 3, but with a few different names sprinkled into the six-man mix that tied for the lead after the first round.
Jordan Smith, who has one top-15 finish this year when he came in third at the Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor, Florida, set himself up to chase his first PGA Tour victory with a a 5-under 65 that has him 10 under at Colonial. Michael Thorbjornsen, whose sole top-five this year was a T3 at the Phoenix Open, matched his second round to get to 9 under for the tournament. First-round co-leader Ryan Gerard is there as well with Hideki Matsuyama and Brian Harman.
With the U.S. Open around the corner, reigning champion J.J. Spaun hopes his strong showing can carry over to Shinnecock Hills. He comes into the day two strokes back alongside Akshay Bhatia, Russell Henley, Brice Garnett and PGA Championship runner-up Alex Smalley. A hole-in-one helped A.J. Ewart card the best round so far (a 7-under 63) and climb into sniffing distance with Ludvig Åberg, Gary Woodland, Mackenzie Hughes and Michael Brennan.
