A woman died in a fire at a multi-family residence May 28 at 638 state Route 212 in Saugerties.
Saugerties police said Ulster County 911 received a report of a fire in a residence at that address just after 3:30 a.m. May 28.
The caller also reported that one resident might still be trapped inside.
When Saugerties police arrived on the scene, they located multiple people who had successfully evacuated from the building.
However, during fire suppression operations, a primary search of the building was conducted and a woman was found dead on the second floor.
She was identified as Li-Anne M. Gableman, 48, whose most recent residence was the hamlet of Wallkill in the Town of Shawangunk in Ulster County.
Five dogs of various breeds also died in the fire.
Due to significant structural damage sustained by the building during the fire, interior firefighting operations and a cause-and-origin investigation by Saugerties police and the Ulster County Fire Investigation Unit were temporarily halted.
The Dutchess County Special Operations Team responded to the scene to assist in stabilizing the structure. That allowed interior firefighting operations and the investigation to continue.
Fire and police units remained on the scene until shortly after 12:30 p.m.
The Centerville Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Glasco, Mount Marion, Ulster Hose and Saugerties fire departments. Also at the scene were Diaz Ambulance, the Ulster County ASPCA, the Ulster County Medical Examiner’s office and the American Red Cross.
