Police are investigating a vehicle that crashed into the Evans Terminal at Detroit Metro Airport the morning of Friday, May 29, an airport official confirmed, in the second such incident this year.
No serious injuries were reported and additional information would be provided as it became available, said airport spokesman Matt Morawski.
A passenger at the terminal told the Free Press that he was standing inside near an entrance and a TSA line around 10 a.m. when he saw a car accelerate and crash through a door.
An alarm went off, and people started running. TSA agents ran toward the vehicle, which appeared to be an SUV, the passenger said.
The Free Press found the door frame of door 4 mangled and its glass shattered Friday morning.
Authorities had the area cordoned off. Shortly after the crash, they prevented passengers from entering the terminal, but let people back in around 11 a.m.
Barricades were added to the terminal after a man who authorities said was experiencing a mental health episode crashed into the McNamera terminal Jan. 23. Six people sustained minor injuries in that incident.
It’s unclear how the vehicle bypassed those barricades to crash into the terminal Friday.
Highway-style concrete barricades are stretched in front of the doors, but there are gaps to the north and south of “Door 4” that would allow a vehicle access to the sidewalk. Still, once on the sidewalk, a vehicle would have to navigate between additional concrete pillars and stainless-steel cylinders to hit the building.

The airport installed the 9,000-pound concrete barricades outside the airport’s two terminals to fortify them against vehicular attacks after the Jan. 23 crash authorities said was intentional.
As of late April, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office had not filed any charges in the case and the man remained jailed on unrelated charges. A spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office did not immediately provide a case update Friday.
The Wayne County Airport Authority submitted a warrant request to the prosecutor Feb. 12 seeking charges of aggravated assault, operating while intoxicated, reckless driving and malicious destruction of over $20,000 in business property.
The Evans terminal includes Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Avelo Airlines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue, Lufthansa, Royal Jordanian, Southwest Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and United Airlines. It housed Spirit Airlines until its recent closure.
