A week ago, Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian opened his mouth and took quite a big shot at his fellow Lone Star State team, the Texas Tech Red Raiders, saying that their strength of schedule is so weak that a team of his backups could easily go undefeated against it.
Now, Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire is calling him on it.
According to The Athletic’s Chris Vannini, McGuire is willing to move heaven and earth — or a couple of non-conference games — in order to get the Longhorns on his schedule this year and settle this on the gridiron.
The Red Raiders are scheduled to play ACU before their Week 2 game against the Oregon State Beavers, while Texas is scheduled to face Texas State ahead of their Week 2 clash against the Ohio State Buckeyes. Obviously, a Week 1 cupcake benefits the Longhorns far more than it does the Red Raiders, since Texas will have a potential national championship preview waiting for them in Week 2.
Of course, it is fun to talk about this and envision a world where things get moved around so trash talk can play out on the field, but there is approximately a zero-percent chance this actually happens. However, it could lead to a non-conference series between Texas Tech and Texas down the road, which would be a lot of fun to watch.
