Sauced-up patty from Cincinnati lands on best burgers in America list

USA TODAY recently released its list of the best burgers in America, and a popular Over-the-Rhine burger made the cut.

The national publication selected Sacred Beast’s Dirty French burger from a nomination-style list I compiled of the 10 best burgers you can find in Cincinnati on May 7. The steak knife-jabbed concoction is a mashup of a great burger and a bowl of French onion soup.

Two beef patties marry perfectly with melty Gruyere, caramelized onions and Mornay sauce in a pool of au poivre sauce. Yes, you need a fork and knife to eat it.

At $20.95, it ain’t cheap, but it makes for a meal (maybe even two).

“The quintessential American food – whether grilled, griddled, smashed or smoked – offers something for everyone,” USA TODAY wrote in the introduction to its best burger selections. “Maybe your favorite is served on a small white paper plate. Or stuck with a silver steak knife. Or smothered with melted cheese. These burgers – classic, creative, contemporary – take comfort food to the next level.”

The Dirty French appeared alongside other top-notch burgers from around the country, including the Joe Bartley Burger at Mr. Bartley’s Burger Cottage (Cambridge, Massachusetts), the Son of Thurman burger at Son of Thurman (Columbus) and the Dream Burger at There, There (Providence, Rhode Island).
