Deputies: Wayne County woman faces dealing count after trip to Ohio

RICHMOND, IN — Wayne County sheriff’s deputies said a local woman was arrested after she allegedly drove to Trotwood, Ohio, to buy fentanyl that was to be distributed in the Richmond area.

Mackenzie Lynn Smith, 28, of Milton, was charged on Tuesday, May 26, in Wayne Superior Court 2 with dealing in a narcotic drug, possession of meth and neglect of a dependent. The dealing count is a Level 2 felony carrying up to 30 years in prison.

According to court documents, deputies learned of Smith’s reported plans to travel to Trotwood — about 40 miles southeast of Richmond — on Friday, Oct. 22, and pulled her Chrysler Pacifica over for speeding along North B Street after she returned to Wayne County.

Investigators said there was “a small child in the back seat of the vehicle” at the time of the traffic stop.

An affidavit reported a plastic bag Smith removed from her pants was determined to hold nearly 30 grams of fentanyl.

A passenger in the Pacifica — Amy Lynn Martin, 33, of Cambridge City — was also determined to be holding a bag with about 5 grams of the substance. She was charged Monday with possession of a narcotic drug.

Smith reportedly acknowledged more fentanyl and meth, both recovered from her purse, belonged to her.

The Milton woman admitted she had been recruited by another Wayne County resident to make the trip to Trotwood to buy $500 worth of narcotics, a court document said.

According to a detective, Smith said she had “a connection in the Trotwood area who sells her larger amounts of narcotics, especially fentanyl.”

Smith was being held in the Wayne County Jail under a $75,000 bond. An initial hearing in her case is set for June 4.

Martin was also being held in the jail. Her bond was set at $25,000.
