Court upholds man's 60-year sentence for Muncie murder conviction

MUNCIE, IN — The Indiana Court of Appeals has upheld a young Michigan man’s 60-year prison sentence for a Muncie murder conviction.

Adonis L. Logan, 20 — a resident of Dearborn, a western suburb of Detroit — received the sentence from Delaware Circuit Court 4 Judge John Feick after pleading guilty to the murder charge in October.

According to court documents, Logan fatally shot Jack R. Simpson, 55, in a home at Elgin Manor Apartments, in the 2500 block of South Elgin Street, on Sept. 16, 2023.

An affidavit said when Logan, then 18, went to the northside Muncie apartment complex on the day of the slaying, he was accompanied by his then-girlfriend, Adriana M. Dillow.

At last year’s sentencing hearing, Logan and his defense attorney, Peter John Capofari, said Dillow persuaded Logan the shooting victim had sexually abused her when she was a juvenile.

Judge Feick and deputy prosecutor Adrian Perez both noted the victim was shot repeatedly, including after he had fallen to the floor.

In an appeal, Logan maintained the length of his prison term was “inappropriate” considering the “nature of the offense and the character of the offender.”

In a 3-0 ruling released on Friday, May 22, the state appeals court rejected those arguments.

“Logan shot the victim 10 times, left him for dead in the apartment and then fled to Detroit and traded the firearm for marijuana,” Judge Peter Foley wrote in the opinion.

The judge also noted Logan, while held in the Delaware County Jail, “accumulated 14 incident reports varying from destruction of of jail property to fighting with fellow inmates.”

He also referred to a statement the Michigan man gave to police saying he had hoped to paralyze the shooting victim “to show him that (he doesn’t) play around,”

Incarcerated at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, Logan has a projected release date in March 2075, when he would be 69 years old.

In March, another Circuit Court 4 jury found Dillow, most recently of Detroit, not guilty of aiding, inducing or causing murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
