FHP: Texas man dies in I-10 crash on Memorial Day

A 56-year-old Texas man is dead after the sedan he was traveling in crashed into a tractor trailer on Interstate 10 in Madison County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver of the sedan, a 31-year-old woman also from Texas, was in critical condition. The Memorial Day wreck temporarily shut down westbound I-10 after it happened shortly after 5 p.m. at the 263 mile marker.

In a news release, troopers said the sedan, which was heading west, was going faster than the tractor trailer and came up behind it. The driver veered into the interstate’s median, then re-entered traffic, smashing into the back of the big rig.

The sedan became trapped under the trailer, and both vehicles came to a stop on the shoulder. The sedan’s passenger, who was sitting in the front, was pronounced dead on scene; the driver was taken to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare with critical injuries, troopers said.

The driver of the tractor trailer wasn’t hurt, they added. All three were wearing seatbelts. (The FHP does not identify crash victims in news releases.)

Troopers were assisted Madison County sheriff’s deputies, Madison County EMS and Madison County FireRescue.
