Officials say the vehicle fled the city, heading south along U.S. 62/TX 207, dropping a female passenger out of the vehicle along the side of the highway before crossing into Crosby County.

The pursuit ended just north of the city of Ralls at the intersection of the highway with Crosby County Road 144.

Officials say the suspect, who has not been named, got out of the vehicle with a firearm. Despite numerous commands to drop the weapon, officials say, the suspect proceeded to fire at officers. The release states there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and law enforcement.

Floyd County Sheriff Paul Raissez confirmed the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer and deputy were not injured.

Other factors contributing to the encounter remain unclear as the investigation is ongoing.

Due to the nature of the incident, the Texas Rangers are handling the case.
