The Los Angeles Rams took care of an important piece of business on Thursday, signing Matthew Stafford to a contract extension that keeps him with the team through the 2027 season. His deal was set to expire after this year but with this new contract, the Rams don’t have to worry about losing him to anything besides retirement next offseason.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the initial terms of Stafford’s contract as being for one year and $55 million, with a max value of $60 million if incentives are earned. Combined with this year, Stafford can now earn up to $105 million in the next two seasons.
The finer details of the deal have not yet been released but if he earns the max of $105 million, that would put him at $52.5 million per year. Where does that put him among the highest-paid quarterbacks, you ask?
Let’s take a look at the list, per Over The Cap.
1. Dak Prescott: $60 million
T-2. Trevor Lawrence: $55 million
T-2. Jordan Love: $55 million
T-2. Josh Allen: $55 million
T-2. Joe Burrow: $55 million
T-6. Brock Purdy: $53 million
T-6. Jared Goff: $53 million
T-8. Justin Herbert: $52.5 million
T-8. Matthew Stafford: $52.5 million
10. Lamar Jackson: $52 million
11. Jalen Hurts: $51 million
Again, we don’t know the exact base value of Stafford’s contract yet, but at most, he’ll make $52.5 million per year, based on Schefter’s reporting. He was set to earn $44 million this year, but it’s likely the Rams gave him a raise in 2026, not just more money in 2027.
At $52.5 million annually, Stafford is tied with Herbert as the eighth-highest-paid quarterback in the NFL currently. That’s slightly ahead of Jackson and Hurts, and still lower than Purdy and Goff.
The Rams don’t have the long-term commitment to Stafford that many other teams do to their young quarterbacks, but sometimes taking it year to year can be beneficial in case one party decides to end the partnership early.
And considering he’s the reigning MVP, $52.5 million is a very reasonable price for Stafford, especially with no signs of his play degrading as he gets older.
